Layers Of Light

Just as refraction of sunlight traveling through Earth’s atmosphere creates layers of light at the horizon, we should create layers of light in our new South Tampa home build, remodel, or renovation project. You cannot have a well-designed, decorated, and functional home until you have implemented some lighting design basics.

To light your home properly, add the three layers of home lighting — ambient, task, and accent/decorative.

• Example of Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting layer or overall lighting. While it should provide illumination for the entire area it should cast a soft glow that bounces off the ceiling and walls to make the room feel inviting. Ambient lighting is typically created by ceiling light fixtures.

Task lighting provides bright, focused lighting for illumination for specific tasks performed in an area. When choosing light for this layer, you should first evaluate what is done in that area (remember your lighting plan?). For example, if you typically read in your favorite chair, you may want a floor lamp for better reading light. Task lighting includes table and floor lights, desk lamps, under cabinet lighting in the kitchen, bathroom vanity lighting, and pendant lighting above smaller areas such as a kitchen island.

• Example of Decorative Lighting.

Accent lighting and Decorative lighting is designed to highlight specific features, such as artwork or architectural details. Accent lighting and decorative lighting, such as chandeliers and wall sconces, are beautiful fixtures that cast light but the primary purpose is to add decorative detail to the room.

This does not mean that you have to use separate fixtures for each layer; some fixtures can function as two layers of lighting at the same time. Your South Tampa builder can help you navigate your way through the layers of lighting so that your home will not only be stunning but functional as well.
